Climate Services Toolbox (CSTools) v4.0: from climate forecasts to climate forecast information

چکیده

Abstract. Despite the wealth of existing climate forecast data, only a small part is effectively exploited for sectoral applications. A major cause this lack integrated tools that allow translation data into useful and skillful information. This barrier addressed through development an R package. Climate Services Toolbox (CSTools) easy-to-use toolbox designed built to assess improve quality forecasts seasonal multi-annual scales. The package contains process-based, state-of-the-art methods calibration, bias correction, statistical stochastic downscaling, optimal combination, multivariate verification, as well basic advanced obtain tailored products. Due modular design in individual functions, users can develop their own post-processing chain shown use cases presented paper, including analysis extreme wind speed event, generation snow depth based on SNOWPACK model, temperature precipitation be used input impact models.

What might we learn from climate forecasts?

Most climate models are large dynamical systems involving a million (or more) variables on big computers. Given that they are nonlinear and not perfect, what can we expect to learn from them about the earth's climate? How can we determine which aspects of their output might be useful and which are noise? And how should we distribute resources between making them "better," estimating variables o...

Intra-seasonal climate prediction - linking Weather and Climate Forecasts

The Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) is a tropical atmospheric phenomenon, associated with periods of active convection in the eastern hemisphere tropics. The MJOs temporal scale (22-90 days) coincides with a gap between weather (synoptic forecasts out to 10 days) and climate (seasonal and longer forecasts).Analysis of 35 years of daily rainfall data shows significant modulation of tropical and e...

Exploring the ability of current climate information to facilitate local climate services for the water sector

Local climate services become increasingly necessary in making adaptation to our changing climate more understandable and manageable. The ability of current climate information to develop and support local climate services for water resources management in close collaboration with local users of the water sector from the island of Crete is being explored. Climate modeling output ranging from ev...

Probabilistic climate forecasts and inductive problems.

The development of ensemble-based 'probabilistic' climate forecasts is often seen as a promising avenue for climate scientists. Ensemble-based methods allow scientists to produce more informative, nuanced forecasts of climate variables by reflecting uncertainty from various sources, such as similarity to observation and model uncertainty. However, these developments present challenges as well a...

On the reliability of seasonal climate forecasts

Seasonal climate forecasts are being used increasingly across a range of application sectors. A recent UK governmental report asked: how good are seasonal forecasts on a scale of 1-5 (where 5 is very good), and how good can we expect them to be in 30 years time? Seasonal forecasts are made from ensembles of integrations of numerical models of climate. We argue that 'goodness' should be assessed...
